Why Education Matters to your Job Prospects

April 29, 2019 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

Finding the right career is a key component in achieving your desired lifestyle. But getting the career you want is tougher than it used to be, and increasingly it depends on your higher education.

There may have been a time in America’s past when education was not essential to a successful career, but those days are all but gone. In the modern competitive economy, a lack of education can severely hamper your efforts in the job market. Not only can education help you get the job you want, it can also increase the range of alternative careers you may be able to pursue, enable you to earn a better wage and make advancement and promotion more likely.

Employment Protection

One of the most significant benefits of maximizing your educational level is that it provides a degree of insurance against unemployment. Though the process of finding work is influenced by many factors, the evidence shows that the higher your level of education, the more likely you are to be able to find work again if you find yourself unemployed. In an economy that is changing rapidly, the ability to quickly find new work in the event of unemployment will be vital to your financial well being.

Protection against Recession

Gaining Higher Education qualifications can also provide you with protection during times of overall economic recession. For example, a report from Georgetown University’s Center on Education found that during the period from 2007 to 2012, when the world economy was still reeling from the effects of the collapse of a number of investment banks, those individuals who held a diploma or lower as their main qualification fared significantly worse than those with a bachelor’s degree or better.

Technical Education Options

The evidence also suggests that increasing your level of education can have a significant positive effect for those engaged in technical training. One consequence of the recession was the rapid growth of two-year technical, trade and community colleges, and gaining qualifications from such educational establishments has helped many students improve their job prospects in a diverse range of sectors, including automotive, horticulture, dental hygiene and early education.

Flexibility in the Job Market

The modern US economy is more dynamic than it has ever been, and the days are long gone when any employee could guarantee that they could stay with the same firm, or even in the same sector of industry for the whole of their working lives. The ability to gain promotion and to switch careers entirely is important, but it is a lot tougher if you have only entry-level career qualifications. Moving into management – where transferable management skills make it easier to switch sectors – is far easier with a bachelor’s degree, and switching careers invariably means going back to school or college to pick up new qualifications. In fact, life-long learning has changed from being an ideal to an essential for those who hope to prosper in the 21st century economy.

Developing Skills

Going to college isn’t just about getting qualifications that will help you to build the career you want. The process of going through a college degree program, such as that provided by Bryant & Stratton College, will give you skills that will be important in navigating the jobs market. From interviewing at Bryant and Stratton College to filling in your college application forms, you will learn through practical application the importance of being able to portray your abilities and qualities in the best possible light to appeal to employers.

For many who go through college, it is also an opportunity to develop and improve their social and communication skills. Colleges bring together a range of people from diverse backgrounds, and put them together in a variety of settings, from one-to-one working to small and large groups, all of which encourages students to polish and develop people skills that will serve them well in their careers. In addition, the academic rigors of a college course help students to build up the essential critical thinking and analytical skills that are keenly sought after by employers.

College Job Seeking Resources

Another benefit of undertaking a college education is that the college will often help by providing access to important resources that will help you in the job market. Tutors will also provide a letter of recommendation for students to present to potential employers, and most colleges provide careers services that can help with everything from interviewing techniques to resumes. And of course, college also offers networking and social opportunities that can pay dividends later in life.

A college education has always been important and desirable, but in the modern economy it is more important than ever that you maximize your educational achievements if you want to build the career and lifestyle that you dream of.
