How to Clean White Sneakers

August 30, 2019 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

If you are a white sneaker fan, you know that they can be the most versatile shoe in your wardrobe. From date night to the gym, your white shoes can take you almost anywhere, but what happens when they get dirty or dingy? Instead of just opting for a few pairs of white discount sneakers, you can protect your favorite name brands by cleaning them. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your sneakers white and ready to wear.

Taking Steps

If you have finally splurged on those Nike or Adidas shoes you’ve always wanted, why not treat them with a stain protector before you add them to your shoe rotation. It’s a lot easier to keep your shoes clean if they have that added layer of stain resistance.

On the Regular

Another thing to keep in mind is that you should clean your sneakers regularly to keep them white and tidy. You can’t wear them every day straight and expect them to look as good as new if you only clean them twice a year. Instead, aim for washing them about every other week, and spot treat them as needed before any stains set in, which makes any dirt harder to clean.

Be Gentle

No matter what material your sneakers are, you should go for a soft hand. Scrubbing hard to remove stains from your favorite Asics sneakers may only make the spot worse. Try instead to gently brush away excess dirt and avoid too much pressure when working on any stain.

Know Your Material

You can try different cleaning techniques depending on what kind of white sneakers you have. Most shoes are either leather, suede, or canvas, and you can use different products and methods for each for the best chance at getting them nice and clean.

  • Leather: You can start by wiping away excess dirt with a damp paper towel. Gently scrub the leather with either white toothpaste and a brush or a mild, white soap and a cotton rag. These methods may reduce or remove the stain, but if not, let your shoes dry before you try again. In fact, you should air dry your shoes for about ten minutes in between each step.
  • Suede: You may not see many white suede sneakers because they do stain easily. A suede brush and a plain pink eraser can work wonders, however; gently rub the stain with an eraser, or blot the stain with white vinegar and a soft cloth. After your sneaker has dried, you can use a suede brush to soften the texture.
  • Canvas: These sneakers are easy to stain but also a bit easier to clean. A paste of baking soda and vinegar or hydrogen peroxide can work wonders on spots. Gently work the paste into the stain, allow it to dry, and then brush away any excess paste.

Also, don’t forget your laces! You may want to handwash your shoe laces, using a toothbrush and baking soda paste, instead of tossing them in the washing machine to get them clean. Thread them back through the shoe when they are dry.

Hopefully, these tips can make cleaning your white sneakers easy and effective. With a little extra TLC, you can keep your favorite kicks pristine until you fall in love with a new pair.
