How To Get Over A Break Up In 5 Easy Steps

January 13, 2021 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

Nothing can rain on your parade quite the same way a break up can. Popular culture sees breakups as a phase full of pints of Ben & Jerry’s, 80’s movie marathons, and fun sexcapades. And while those things can make you feel better at some point or another, sometimes they’re not enough. Breakups are tough, but you should never let them ruin your life!

Here are 5 fool-proof tips you can follow to get over your breakup:

  • Make Plans

When you’re in a relationship, you often spend a lot of time with your partner. So the transition back to single-life can be quite lonely. To avoid feeling this way, try making plans with your friends, family, or even your co-workers. The more you keep your calendar full, the less you’ll experience loneliness and fatigue.

  • Focus On Yourself

Breakups can leave you with a lot of free time on your hands. And while spending time with your support system is important, you should also practice self-care. Exploring new hobbies, picking up a brand new book, exercising, changing your diet, volunteering, and focusing on your career all serve as great distractions from your ex. Not only that, but they can also improve your self-esteem.

  • Remove Triggers & Reminders

In the age of Instagram and Snapchat, it can be really hard to get distance from an ex after you break up. While it might feel a bit petty, it can be really helpful for you to unfollow, mute, or even block your ex on social media. You can even delete their number or some pictures from your social media accounts. Not knowing when your ex is going out to the bar or hanging out with someone you were never fond of will make it easier for you to get over the breakup.

  • Be Patient

As much as we wish there was a quick, painless way to completely get over someone, there’s none. Recovering from a breakup takes time, so don’t give yourself a deadline or bottle up any feelings just because you don’t “want to feel them anymore.” Being sad is ok as long as you still engage in healthy and proactive activities.

  • Consult Someone

Talking about your breakup, whether it be with your best friend, sibling, or a trained coach on a relationship self-help app like Relish, can take a lot of stress off your shoulders. It’s worth a try!
