What’s your favorite period of history? Is it ancient Greece, with their incredible pantheon of Gods, and monsters who could turn people into stone with a single look? Is it ancient Rome, which conquered half the world but stole most of its mythology from the ancient Greeks? Perhaps it’s the Egyptians, who built pyramids using methods that still elude our greatest minds in the world. Everyone will have their own take on this question, but for us, it’s the Aztecs. They were every bit as advanced as the Egyptians when it came to building pyramids and temples, but they wore scarier masks, and they had incredibly intricate human sacrifice ceremonies. We don’t know whether it’s the gore, the masks, or the fact that we understand so little about this lost culture, but they win out over all the others for us.
If you share our fascination with the Aztecs and you’re also an occasional (or regular) visitor to online slots websites, we have some good news for you. The Aztec theme is a very popular one among online slots players. There are well over two dozen Aztec-themed online slots available to players at the moment, and that goes a long way to underline just how many people around the world have a grim fascination with this mystifyingly advanced and yet brutal culture. Not all of them are great, but we’ve played the bad ones, so you don’t have to. That also means we’ve played the good ones, and we can let you know which ones they are. Let’s get on with doing precisely that – here are the five best Aztec-themed online slots available to players today!
Amazing Aztecs
We promised you amazing Aztec-themed slots, so let’s start with one that’s literally called “Amazing Aztecs.” This is a May 2018 release from the “JustForTheWin” studio, and most of the fun to be had with it is based around the respin feature. The action happens on a well-animated 5×3 grid, but the grid features a whole 243 paylines backed up with 96.03% RTP, so don’t be fooled into thinking this is your average slot. There are free spins to go with the respins, but your best bet of finding big-time success is triggering the respins feature and then coaxing one of the 3xx “Mega Symbols” to land on your reels and pay out a big prize. If we’re going to nitpick, we think the depictions of the Aztecs on the game’s screens look more like ancient Egyptians, but that doesn’t spoil our enjoyment of the slot.
Almighty Aztec
As we pulled up “Amazing Aztecs” for potential historical inaccuracies, we should do the same for “Almighty Aztec” by Spin Play Games. The loading screen (and background) of the slot shows a depiction of Teotihuacan, the mighty Mesoamerican city with its great pyramid. The issue is that we’re not 100% sure the Aztecs built it. They definitely used it, but it might be a leftover from a previous culture. Again, don’t let that put you off playing this gripping online slots game. There may only be ten ways to win, but they pay both ways, and they’re backed by 96.38% RTP. There’s also a lot of wild action to be had on the five reels, from additional wilds to sticky wilds and expanding wilds. The maximum jackpot is 500x your stake, which is a little low, but if you’re playing for a good time rather than a hugely profitable one, that shouldn’t matter.
John Hunter and the Aztec Treasure
For those who aren’t ‘in the know,’ John Hunter is Pragmatic Play’s non-copyright-infringing answer to Indiana Jones. He’s appeared in several of the company’s slots, and he took a trip to the land of the Aztecs in this July 2019 release. Typically speaking, Pragmatic Play is known for its solid, traditional online slots. This is not a typical Pragmatic Play slot. It’s a massive, engaging creation played on a 6×6 reel-and-row set with a massive 7776 ways to win and 96.5% RTP. When it comes to bonus offerings, we have a bonus wheel, a free spins feature, and some generous multipliers – and that’s not to mention that, as is so often the case with Pragmatic Play’s line of products, the slot looks fantastic. This is a little more complex than the other slots that we’ve looked at thus far, but it’s great fun once you’ve got your head around it.
Aztec Spins
The first thing you’ll notice when you load Red Tiger’s “Aztec Spins” is that the whole 6×4 reel set is mounted on a gigantic bonus wheel. You may get the impression that this slot is more about the bonus features than it is about the base game, and you’d be correct in that assessment. The base game offers you a generous 30 ways to win payable in both directions with 95.71% RTP, which is a fair enough offering even without the bonuses. With the bonuses activated, we have free spins, stacking symbols, huge multipliers, respins, variable RTP, and matching mystery symbols to deal with. If you can trigger the free spins feature, you’re even more likely to see the bonus wheel revolve, which could potentially give you a new bonus on top of your existing bonus! It’s not as visually attractive as some of our other slots, but when the game is this good, that scarcely matters.
Montezuma Megaways
We’re aware that ‘Megaways’ slots are becoming increasingly popular in the modern age, so what kind of friends to you would we be if we didn’t include an Aztec-themed ‘Megaways’ slot among our recommendations? If ‘Megaways’ is your thing, check out “Montezuma Megaways” by WMS, which was released in January 2020. Using the ‘Megaways’ functionality, this slot offers a whopping 117649 ways to win and backs that up with 96.17% RTP and a ‘collapsing wins’ system that rewards you with the chance of an instant second win every time you make a winning combination. Multipliers are theoretically unlimited, and if you’re having trouble triggering the free spins feature through the base game, you can simply buy access to it instead. This is a slot that you can almost play on your own terms, and it’s not surprising to us at all that it’s become so popular in such a short space of time.
We have no way of knowing what the mighty Aztec rulers of the past would have thought of becoming online slots stars. Maybe they’d have enjoyed the adulation – or maybe they’d have sacrificed the programmers for their heresy! All we know is that they’ve inspired some incredible slots, and we hope you enjoy playing them as much as we have.
