3 Things You Can Do to Avoid Locksmith Scams

January 21, 2021 / by Violet & Anna / Leave a Comment

Brisbane is one of Australia’s most populated cities, and it is home to more than 2 million people. Being a metropolitan area, it houses both residential and commercial properties. Since the area is very populous and has both business and housing-related areas, many residents opt to utilise various home security measures, such as installing various locks or adding additional surveillance cameras.

With this many buildings with several security measures, there may be cases wherein people find themselves locked out of their homes or other types of security emergencies. Unfortunately, some people may take advantage of these security emergencies and pretend to be a locksmith. These frauds would copy the format of actual locksmith companies so that people who want to find a locksmith in Brisbane will not find them too suspicious. With this in mind, it is best to calm down during these security emergencies and keep the following tips in mind, so you will not get scammed by a fraud.

  • Ask Questions Thoroughly and Look For Complete Answers

Most fraud locksmiths use a call-centre approach of getting hired, and they usually do not have any actual office. Always ask for the name and full address of their office. If they provide an address, discuss your security concern. You may provide them with a photo of the lock then ask how they will fix it. Ensure that they give you a detailed process and the rationale for why they would do a certain procedure. It is usually a red flag if they tell you that they will drill your lock, especially if it is not even a high-security lock. In general, if the locksmith refuses to answer your questions or provides shady excuses, refrain from hiring them.

  • Ask For a Cost Estimate and Potential Additional Charges

Ask for the cost estimate during the call and onsite. It would help if you also asked for other factors that can potentially change the service’s price, such as emergency fees or transportation. Take note that scams would often endorse low prices but push that your lock is broken, then they would endorse unreasonably expensive locks that provide “the best security”. If the locksmith provides a very different quote from what they stated on the phone without a detailed reason, do not allow them to do the job.

  • Ask for an ID and a License

If you find yourself searching for a locksmith in Brisbane, find a suitable expert who is relatively near you, and always ask for a government ID. After asking for their proof of identification, ask for their license. The government of Queensland ergo, including Brisbane requires a license for jobs that involve security. These jobs include installing, repairing, and maintaining acoustic, electronic, or mechanical security equipment. In case they fail to provide a license, even if they tempt you by providing a very low service price, you should move on to a different locksmith to prevent any potential security breach.

A big city would have numerous residential areas and establishments that would need help regarding their security. Unfortunately, many ill-intentioned people are willing to take advantage of this. Hence, it is best to look for reliable locksmiths that are licensed and from reputable establishments.
